Strikingly clear ponds at the foot of the vast Shirakami-Sanchi mountains, on the Sea of Japan side of Aomori. The "Twelve Lakes" area here actually contains 33 ponds, and while outside the UNESCO World Heritage boundary itself, it is a popular spot for trekking among lakes surrounded by beech forest.
